98 Degrees members on first visit to
Jamaica
Tuesday, April 02, 2002
Two members of the platinum-selling pop boy group, 98 Degrees,
were recently in the island. The members Drew Lachey and Justin
Jeffre, along with Vanessa Carlton (her latest single A Thousand
Miles, on Interscope Records, has moved from #23 to #16 on this
week's Billboard Hot 100 Chart,) had accompanied Chicago's KISS
103.5 FM to the Hedonism 3 hotel for a remote radio station
promotion.
I spoke to both Justin and Drew, and they had nothing but good
words about their first visit to the island.
"We are having a good time. It's part vacation and part work,"
joked Justin.
98 Degrees is best known for hits such as: It's the Hardest Thing,
Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche); Because of You; I Do (Cherish
You); and Invisible Man.
98 Degrees emerged on the scene in 1997 and to date the group has
released four albums, 1997's 98 Degrees; 1998's 98 Degrees and
Rising; 2000's This Christmas and last year's Revelation. The
group also teamed with Mariah Carey and Joe on the Top two hit
Thank God I Found You. The other members of 98 Degrees are Nick
Lachey, Drew's brother, and fiancée to fellow pop star Jessica
Simpson; and Jeff Timmons.
The group's latest effort, The 98 Degrees Collection a compilation
of their biggest hits along with two new singles, is due for
release on May 7. The two new songs are Why, which was produced by
Soul Shock and Kalin; and Never Let Go.
When asked what they liked about Jamaica, Drew and Justin
immediately said "the people". "We haven't really gotten to see
all of Jamaica but the other night we went to this club and it was
awesome. We were also hoping to go to Ocho Rios too, but maybe
next time", said Drew.
Apart from Jamaica, the guys have visited the Bahamas. Die hard
fans of reggae music, they love the music for its message and
spirituality.
"We performed with Ziggy Marley at a charity show some time ago,
and it was fun just hanging with him. We performed Get Up Stand Up
with him on the stage", said Justin.
"Everyone always talks about Jamaica and reggae music. So far we
have been having a wonderful time here. The vibe here is
different. Its one of the hottest places to be", said Drew between
sips of Red Stripe beer.
98 Degrees will be taking a brief hiatus to concentrate on various
projects.
"We have been given opportunities in film, production, production
deals, label deals and acting, so we are going to explore all of
these. Afterwards, we will be heading back into the studios to
record new material," explained Drew. Shabba Ranks, Shaggy, Ziggy
Marley and of course Bob Marley are tops on these guys' lists as
far as tastes in reggae.
"Almost every college kid has that Legend album from Bob Marley.
It's just off the hook," said Drew. "Reggae music is making a
comeback right now. A lot of folks are coming from the US to
Jamaica to just chill and write songs. Just last month I know of a
few recording artistes and producers who came down here to just
catch a vibe to write songs. The reggae rhythm is very unique,"
concluded Drew.

From Billboard
98 Degrees "Why" Universal Records
The boy-band star is fading in the sky in the U.S. these days,
and 98 Degrees has certainly suffered its share of diminishing
returns with recent releases. The quartet closes its current
musical chapter with dignity via a lovely and redeeming ballad,
"Why (Are We Still Friends)," from greatest-hits set "The
Collection," due May 7. The lead vocals of Nick Lechey still ring
true; this guy has one of the great, more flexible voices in the
pop spectrum. But for any act that's regarded as a member of the
'90s youth movement, top 40 airplay has become as tough as
birthing triplets (save for 'N Sync, whose new faux urban persona
is more embarrassing than evolutionary), so the act's best bet for
radio success may be on AC stations, which have supported such
hits as "The Hardest Thing" and "I Do (Cherish You)" in the past.
True, 98 Degrees's previous set, "Revelation," was a step down
from earlier hits, but this mature effort pushes all the right
buttons, showcasing a group that will hopefully find its way back
for chapter two.
